All patient rooms and work areas outfitted with copper-infused surfaces to help reduce spread of disease-causing bacteria

Norfolk, Virginia – EOS Surfaces, LLC, a leading surfaces technology manufacturer dedicated to innovation with a strong aesthetic, cost reduction and increased safety, is proud to announce the unveiling of its largest hospital installation at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. The installation is part of the full “rebuild” of Sentara Leigh, which was completed in April with the opening of the new West Tower. All 250 patient rooms and accompanying work areas are outfitted with EOScu (Cupron Enhanced EOS) copper-infused surfaces, including countertops, over-the-bed tables and bed rails. EOScu is the only synthetic hard surface on the market that is EPA registered for public health claims, actively and continuously killing 99.9% of harmful bacteria* within two hours of exposure, even after recontamination.

The Sentara Leigh West Tower overhaul is part of a larger renovation project, in which the hospital reinvented itself within the footprint of its original campus dating back to the mid-1970s. The West Tower renovation mirrors the East Tower renovation, which was completed in November 2013. The East Tower’s 129 patient rooms and work areas are also equipped with EOScu surfaces.

“EOS is honored to be part of the Sentara Leigh renovations. Sentara Healthcare has received national recognition for its effort to reduce infections and improve patient care and we are a proud partners in this endeavor. Our Preventive|Biocidal Surfaces™ aim to help reduce the spread of hospital acquired infections by keeping high traffic areas, such as those that are part of the Sentara Leigh Towers, clean of harmful bacteria. This contributes to better patient care,” said Ken Trinder, CEO of EOS Surfaces, the manufacturer of EOScu.

Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) are a growing threat to patient safety. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HAIs cause 75,000 deaths per year in U.S. hospitals and add up to $45 billion per year to healthcare costs[1], making an urgent need for prevention. Harmful bacteria prevalent in healthcare settings can lead to infection, especially in patients with vulnerable immune systems. By installing copper-infused materials, such as EOScu, facilities can help reduce the spread of bacterial infections.

The West Tower renovation is part of the largest known clinical trial for copper-infused surfaces and materials, and their impact on healthcare associated infections. Launched in March2014, the trial includes the installation of more than 15,000 square feet of patent-pending EOScu Preventive|Biocidal surfaces on virtually all clinical and patient-room surfaces, including bed tables and bed rails. Copper-infused linens are also part of the trial.
